Spring is right around the corner and so is the New Mexico Off Road Series Opener. The annual Coyote Classic is number 1 on the series happening on Sunday March 20, 2011. The classes will be the usual: Cat 1 (Pro/Expert), Cat 2 (Sport), Cat 3 (Beginner) and Single Speed Open. All classes will be divided between male and female riders and into USA Cycling age categories: Juniors 18 and Under, Ages 19-29, Ages 30-39, Ages 40-49 and Ages 50+.

The course will be on the north east side of the Franklin Mountains on State Park and Bowen Ranch land. Mileage will be announced as soon as the course is finalized, but, you can expect the usual challenging and fun single track with a touch of jeep road here and there.

It is $25.00 to race as long as you register before Monday March 14th. A $10.00 late registration fee will be added there after. Online registration will be hosted at www.newmexicosportsonline.com and ends Friday March 18th at midnight. All racers must have a USA Cycling License or purchase a $10.00 one day license. Cat 1 racers must have an Annual USA Cycling License. NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION!

Race T-Shirts are $10.00 each. Sizes S M L XL.

Packet pick up is Saturday March 19th, at The Bicycle Co. 3800 N Mesa Suite D-5 El Paso, Texas 79902 12:00 - 6:00 PM. (915)544-2453.

Camping will be available to all racers and spectators Saturday March 19, into Sunday evening, for the low price of $5.00. There will be a designated bonfire area, we ask that all open fires be controlled in a grill(Propane or Charcoal). Alcohol is permitted.

Bowen Ranch has been kind enough to allow the mountain bike community to host races year after year at their beloved ranch. We ask that everyone treat the ranch with the utmost respect and leave your area cleaner than you found it.

Directions to Venue:
The venue entrance is located 2.6 miles north of U.S. 54 on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (Farm to Market Road 3255) on the west side of the road. Driver's will be greeted by a large sign that reads BOWEN RANCH. Below is a Google Map of the general area. If you follow the link to the larger map, you will find that the venue is located on what is called E.P.N.G. Pipeline Rd.

Educate Motorists

El Paso became the 5th Texas City to pass the safe passing ordinance on Tuesday December 7. Ironically, within 24 hrs of this winning legislation, long time cyclist Gabe Perez was hit early Wednesday during his morning ride.

Although the safe passing ordinance will help many cyclists and pedestrians, educating motorists and cyclist of proper road usage, is key to safe shared use of our city roads.

Even then cycling on the road presents dangers that we can only hope to be avoid. I wish Gabe a full and speedy recovery.

Tis the season to be riding...

If you are still fumbling over which bike to buy this season, stop sweating the investment and join us for two days of riding 2011 model year bikes, the Trek Demo will be in town offering up their bikes for free test rides at the Franklin Mt. State Park. The demo will be rolling in for a weekend stay on December 11th & 12th, 10:00 am - 3:00 PM daily, at the Chuck Heinrich Park in Northeast El Paso. If you are unfamiliar with this area, exit I-10 heading north on Highway 54, exit Highway 54 at Martin Luther King Blvd proceed north and take a left at the traffic light onto Jon Cunningham. Chuck Heinrich park will be located at the end of the road. This is the access point for the east side of the Franklin Mt. State Park.

The Bicycle Company will be providing food and drinks. All you need to bring is a valid picture ID, a helmet, and pedals if you'd like to use your own. Call the Bicycle Company at 915-544-2453 for any other information you might need.

Riding For Suz

Suzanne Nolan pictured above left.

Suzanne Nolan is a fellow mountain biker. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will not be racing at this year's 12 hours of Old El Paso. Instead, she will be fighting to overcome this disease. Although you will not see her racing, you sure will see her team of supporters, in fact you will hear her name a lot. Suzanne has become the inspiration of a new direction for 12 Hours of Old El Paso.

October is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 12 Hours of Old El Paso 2010 is dedicated to those riders among us who are kept off of their bicycles due to cancer. Although we are focusing on raising awareness for breast cancer, we will be donating money to the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation in hopes that our small effort can ripple into a larger positive effect on the fight against cancer.

The above jersey is being raffled off at The Bicycle Company

Todd & Jan Haugen have kindly donated a Bicycle Company Jersey autographed by professional cyclists Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer, Johan Bruyneel, Jason McCartney and Floyd Landis for raffle. Raffle tickets will be $5.00 each, or five for $20.00. All proceeds will be donated to the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation the Nolan Family's foundation of choice.

Race Day is Closing In...

In fact, there are less than 9 weeks until race day - Yeah, that might seem like a long way off, but 2011 is practically here - That being the case, I thought I would start getting you all acquainted with the race rules. Don't worry, these are more like guidelines to a happy ending for our 12 hours of Old El Paso.

Race Rules
1. Have fun and be nice to your fellow competitors - Don't take yourself too seriously - cause in the end you're just riding a bicycle in spandex.
2. Make it a goal to leave no trace other than tire tread marks on trails, don't leave anything behind, litter bugs will be squashed on sight.
3. Follow instructions given by Race Officials, Staff, Park Rangers, Police and Volunteers. These people are there to make this event enjoyable and safe for everyone.
4. Wear you're helmet while riding your bike, racing or not, on or off the course, it might even be a good idea to keep it on once the kegs are tapped.
6. USE YOUR LIGHTS. Once the sun drops behind that mountain, the desert gets dark, all riders will be required to use lights on the course during night laps.
7. Each team member is required to complete at least one lap.
8. Any attempt to cut the course will result in disqualification of the cheater and their entire team.
9. All co-ed teams - this one is obvious, but you'd be surprised - are required to have a minimum of one person of the opposite sex.
10. Passing on the course will happen, the overtaking rider is responsible for passing safely, please be courteous. Also, if you are the rider being passed, move over when asked the first time.
11. Only one member of each team is allowed on the race course at any given time, no half lap trade offs.
12. All protests must be made during the protest period and must be submitted in writing by the team's captain.
13. On ground campfires are not allowed, we will have a main bonfire for the enjoyment of all, if you must have a fire make sure it is in a contained above ground contraption, such as fire pit, grill, etc. We are in a desert and dry plants catch fire quickly.

2010 12 Hours of Old El Paso Race Course Map

12 Hour Race Format

12 Hours of Old El Paso is a team relay or solo rider endurance race. The race begins at 10 a.m. Saturday October 23, 2010 and will end 12 hours later at 10 p.m. All riders will compete on the same 8 mile course.

The race categories include: Solo(male or female), Duo(male or female), Single Speed Solo(male or female), Team of 4(male, female or co-ed) and Corporate Teams of 5 up to 10 members(male, female and co-ed). All categories are open format and will not be divided into age categories or USA Cycling Categories(age divisions may occur if the number of racers demands it). Co-ed teams must include at least one member of the opposite sex. All registered team members must complete at least 1 lap (or team will be marked as Did Not Finish).

The race starts at 10:00 am, but, plan on being at the venue as early as possible (Unless you feel like parking at the entrance gate 1 mile away from the main tent). There will be a racer meeting at 9:00 am, be there and listen for any race updates and other important race related info and instructions.

The race venue is located in the northeast part of El Paso, north of the North Hills Neighborhood, on Bowen Ranch. The venue entrance is located 2.6 miles north of U.S. 54 on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and approximately 2 miles south of Stan Roberts Sr Ave. Signs will be placed at the gate directing racers to the Bowen Roundhouse Venue.

We ask that you please follow the direction of parking attendants in an effort to maximize the utilization of parking space.

Evidently since the two cultures didn't already have enough cross pollination, beer and bike lovers have come together to form one of the best inventions since the wheel. Evidence of a Renaissance in the art of the handmade bicycle is made manifest by a bike (not trike) outfitted with two kegs on tap, a pizza rack and solar powered sound system. The Euro style cargo bike received its American flavor in Portland, Oregon. Built by the custom frame artisans at Metrofiets.

The Buffalo Theory

There are many instances when we can derive wisdom from those who have been around the block a couple of times. Perhaps it is a shared experience, one that we can further decipher into instructions, detailing what or what not to do in our own life. Or maybe it is an idea expressed in rambling thought, trying to manifest itself into a half molded theory, awkwardly making sense but never fully maturing into a logical statement. The Buffalo Theory is one such idea. (Believe it or not there is a point to this so keep reading)

The Buffalo Theory: A herd of buffalo is only as strong as its weakest member. The predator, lets say in this case a lion, knows that he stands a better chance in attacking the weakest member rather than the herd's strongest buffalo. Anyone who has watched Animal Planet long enough knows this. The lion will stalk its prey long enough to determine which target to attack, and then, the chase is on. This process happens everyday, and although the end result is usually a bloody mess, there is a benefit. You see, as the weak members are picked off one by one, the herd inherently becomes stronger. The end result is a fed beast and a stronger faster herd.

How does this relate to you? Well many a time I have heard that alcohol kills brain cells. The buffalo theory acknowledges this fact and states that while drinking, often in excessive amounts, "weak" brain cells are killed off. Subsequently leaving a stronger better herd of brain cells. Therefore, enjoy that cold post ride brewski, in fact enjoy the six cold ones that follow. No one wants a weak brain so drink up. Although the buffalo theory has no scientific backing whatsoever, it sure is a ridiculous idea worth mentioning over a sixer, or not. Have a great weekend and don't drink and ride(or drive).

It was an awesome day for a mountain bike race, 63 degrees and plenty of sunshine, no serious injuries, and over 260 racers. We couldn't have asked for a better turnout at this year's Coyote Classic. Extra thanks to all of our sponsors and supporters: Firestone Tire Co., Southwest Airlines, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Bowen Ranch, Hammer Nutrition, Sport Legs, Medical Billing Unlimited, Vinton Saddlery, The Borderland Mountain Bike Association, all the volunteers and local bike shops, Burritos El Padrino, David Dawson's burritos and cobbler and anyone else who had a hand in helping.

Bowen Ranch has been kind enough to allow the Mountain Bike Community to host a third MTB Race at their beloved Round House. The race course will be different from last year, including an easier beginner course. You can expect plenty of beer for all of age(over 21) and food for the racers. Award ceremonies following the race, and plenty of fun times.

10 years ago I bought my first "real" bike from a "real" bike shop. That purchase has been my greatest investment yet. Sure I may have sold and purchased many bikes since then, but the spirit remains the same, and luckily, my group of friends that I started riding with 10 years ago is the same group of guys I ride with today. I have been through many adventures on my bicycle, solidified friendships that will last a lifetime, I have learned lessons, broken bones, broken my wallet, traveled, but the ride isn't over yet. Here's to another 10 awesome years of riding bicycles with friends who are more like family.

Whether it be a long stretch of road, an epic single track or a flowing park, I can rest assured that for the next few hours, every other worry I could have let enter my mind can be forgotten. With sweat on my brow and a smile on my face I live in the moment and return to youth. My bicycle saves me.

I've got good news and bad news, since I'm a believer in getting the bad over with, here it goes: Josh, the guy who tours around the country with a rig full of Trek and Gary Fisher bicycles was injured on a ride up in Colorado, he suffered a shoulder separation tearing his AC Joint. If you're lucky enough to have never suffered this or any kind of shoulder injury, trust me it sucks, this is what it looks like-

Subsequently, the Demo planned for this Saturday had to be canceled. The good news, Trek is rescheduling a Demo for our area. As soon as I get word of the exact dates I will let y'all know. Until then, the trails are nice and moist, go ride your bicycles, and do your best to avoid any injuries.

Trek is on the road again....

Gary Fisher has the Superfly 100, the lightest full carbon 29'er available. Trek has the Top Fuel 9.9SL that comes in at the staggeringly light weight of 20.5 lbs. The best thing is Trek wants you to try out these sweet rides (plus many more) on your local trails. December 5, 2009 is a Saturday you'll want to keep open. Come to the Trek and Gary Fisher Outdoor Demo and ride all the bikes these two bike loving companies have to offer.

The demo will be held at the Chuck Heinrich Park on the North East side of the Franklin Mountain State Park. All are welcome, and there is no charge to ride, just be sure to bring a photo ID. If you have any questions call The Bicycle Co. at 915-544-2453 for more info.

There were schoolgirls and there were pirates, 26'ers and 29'ers, racers and spectators, Blue Moon and Shiner. Some of us chose to ride single speeds, others enjoyed their granny gear, and everyone loved Happy Hill. The crowd was mixed full of characters, from seasoned racers fighting off cramps, to recreational riders fighting off cramps. The numbers of laps ridden varied, the numbers of beers consumed is a blur, but the numbers of smiles in the crowd, well, those were countless.

There was a vibe that captured the essence of why we do what we do - Bicycles are FUN - and it showed on Saturday.

It was early in the summer when Mike Rosson had mentioned he wanted El Paso to have a 12 hr race. After a few phone calls, mentioning the idea at a couple group rides, planning a date then rescheduling, along with many hours of work and thousands of dollars of sponsorship money, 12 Hours of Old El Paso happened.

The weather was great aside from the occasional gust of wind that pestered both racers and spectators alike. I don't know what you other guys felt but it always seemed like the wind was in my face, no matter what direction I was facing, making Knapp’s Road that much more fun to climb. When in the pits area I saw a few Tents going with the wind. My apologies for the A-Frames tumbling over with most of your bikes on them (Rest assured we will have a better system for next year's event).

Hopefully, everyone enjoyed the hotdogs and burgers, sorry to the vegetarians amongst us (Brent, did you get a veggie burger?). I know everyone loved the Blue Moon, 'cause that keg went fast.

Thankfully, no serious injuries were sustained by racers, or the kids in the jumping balloons (I know the wind blew them over a few times while loaded with the little grommets).

We were all exhausted by the time the fireworks shot off, after the awards were given out, everyone was eager to get into their RVs and Tents to sleep. Funny thing is we forgot to give out the prizes. Don't worry; we still have them, along with your contact information that you were supposed to list on the registration form. If you think you may have forgotten to list your info, contact me at chris_oaxaca@yahoo.com, and I will be sure to get you your prizes.

Sorry, it seems we will not have an official race website built on time for this years 12 Hours of Old El Paso. Hopefully this will help answer any questions you have.

Time and Date:
The race will be held on Saturday October 24, 2009 and begin at 10:00am until 10:00 PM. There will be no race day registration. If you have not yet registered, you can do so online at New Mexico Sports Online until mid-night Thursday October 22, or in person until Friday October 23 at The Bicycle Company.

Friday October 23, will also be packet pick up day at The Bicycle Company, at 3800 N. Mesa Suite D5. Call 915-544-2453 for directions. Packet pick up begins at noon.

If you are a junior rider, please come with your legal parent or guardian on packet pick up day so that they can sign your waiver and release form.

Location:
The North East part of El Paso is home to some of the finest trails in the area, recently, Texas Parks annexed the land from Castner Range north to Bowen Ranch. Thanks to Bowen Ranch, allowing us to use their land, along with this change in land management, we are able to use The Bowen Round House as a venue for our 12 Hr Race.

Directions to Venue:
The venue entrance is located 2.6 miles north of U.S. 54 on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (Farm to Market Road 3255) on the west side of the road. Driver's will be greeted by a large sign that reads BOWEN RANCH. Below is a Google Map of the general area. If you follow the link to the larger map, you will find that the venue is located on what is called E.P.N.G. Pipeline Rd.

Camping:
Camping will be available at the venue both Friday and Saturday nights at no charge. We would like to encourage you to stay at one of the local El Paso area hotels. All racers who stay at local hotels will receive a ten dollar cash rebate on their race registration with proof of stay.

The venue will have designated parking and camping areas. Port-a-potties will be provided. Remember this is a desert, there will NOT be any running water. So we suggest that you bring plenty of water for both drinking and washing off during/post race.

According to the forecast provided by The Weather Channel, Saturday October 24, 2009 a.k.a. Race Day will have a temperature high of 77 and a low of 57 degrees Fahrenheit and clear sunny skies - However, this is not a guarantee, so be prepared, the event will be held RAIN OR SHINE!

Race Course:
Here is a map of the Trails with the Course Outlined.

The course starts at The Bowen Round House, an elevation of 4,250ft, with a Le mans start. Riders will ride from the Round House on "Lazy Cow" following the course in a clockwise direction. There is roughly 760ft of climbing, both single track and jeep roads, all of which will be clearly marked.

Classes
Racers can register as: Solo Male, Solo Female, Solo Single Speed, Duo Male, Duo Female, Duo CO-ED, Teams of 4 Male, Teams of 4 Female, Teams of 4 CO-ED. CO-ED designations require at least one female. USA Cycling categories (Cat1, Cat2, Cat3) will be assigned to Teams of 4 only. Only Solo Single Speed racers will have individual category. Depending on the number of racers registered in each category, we may group classifications together.

Prizes will be awarded to top 3 finishers in each category. Trophies and prizes will be presented after scoring is complete.

Post Race Party
The whole day will be a huge party on wheels, there will be plenty of food, beer and entertainment throughout the day for adults and kids (I guess we all feel like kids on bicycles) including a jumping balloon, music, and the post race costume party.

Racers and spectators are permitted to bring alcohol, however, we ask that there be no illegal serving of alcohol to underage persons(under 21, born after October 24, 1988 on race day).

Remember we are guests on Bowen Ranch, we ask that all participants in the day's activities clean up after themselves, and treat the ranch with respect. We want to keep the trails Bowen Ranch has allowed us to build, and continue to hold this event year after year.

Suggestions
Remember, the day light isn't lasting as long anymore, so expect at least 5 hours of dark during the race. Have your riding lights charged and ready for use.

Riders should bring a pump, tools, extra chain, shift and brake cables, tires, tubes, bike work stand, tents or E-Z Up for pit area, water, water, water, toilet paper, trash bags, energy supplements and food. There will be lights set up at the main tent area, but it wouldn't hurt to have your own light for your pit area.

Spectators should bring, other spectators, cameras, cowbells, air horns, "their fun". (Think Dave's and Buster's Commercial)

All in all this should be another fun bike event to mark your calendars for year after year.

Course Cleaning After Group Ride

The weather is prime for anything outdoors especially riding. Tomorrow we will be out at the North East riding the 12 hr race course and then some.

A lot of people are concerned about the condition of the course. Our recent swell of rain storms have wrecked some havoc on parts of the course. No need to get cold feet, after tomorrow's group ride, we will be doing some trail maintenance.

The group ride will start at 8:00 am and the maintenance will be around 12:00 PM.

It's one thing when an amateur takes a serious spill, but something terrifies me when it happens to one of the best bike riders in the world. I remember watching the novice class racers at Desert Downs several years ago. You could compare those races to watching someone wheelie with a loose front wheel. It's not a question of "if" they are going to wreck, but rather a question of "how bad". As a new rider, you are expected to crash. It is part of earning your stripes.

Sadly, every now and then it happens to someone at the top of their game. It's disturbing to know that if it happened to them there is an exponentially better chance it could happen to you.

Wear your helmets kids.

We want to bring you the funnest event possible to close out the 2009 Mountain Bike Race Season, we have pushed the date for the 12 Hours of Old El Paso back to Saturday October 24th. The event will still be held at the Bowen Roundhouse, a 10am to 10 PM endurance race, followed by a night of celebration. There will be plenty of music, food, beer and bike loving fun.

The Savior of BMX: Van Homan

Depending on who you ask, Bicycle Motocross peaked during the mid-eighties. Movies like Rad and Pee Wee's Big Adventure played a huge role in the sport's popularity. But just like everything else, BMX has it's ups and downs. After the novelty of 80's "freestyle" trend wore off, the sport went into hiding. I've only been riding since the mid 90's but at that time, BMX was just coming back out of the underground. This could be attributed to the popularity of the X-Games. TV helped put BMX back in the spotlight, and sparked the interest of a whole new generation of riders. Despite these last 14 glorious years, according to some 20 inch publications, BMX is heading into another recession. In an effort to keep the market share of the aging BMX'er, many "hardcore" BMX manufacturers have begun making fixed gear and mountain bikes. While some may think this is a great idea, others are calling it the demise of BMX.

Bicyclist killed by hit-and-run driver Sunday morning

EL PASO - A bicyclist was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday on the far East Side, El Paso police said.
67-year-old Heinz Duerkop, of the 11200 block of Thunder Cloud, was killed when he was hit from behind by a white vehicle while riding a bicycle south on George Dieter Drive north of Edgemere Boulevard, police spokesman Officer Chris Mears said. Duerkop was thrown from the bike and died at the scene.

The police Special Traffic Investigations Unit was searching for a the driver of what has only been described as a white vehicle.

Anyone with information may call El Paso Police Communications at 832-4400 or Crime Stoppers of El Paso at 566-8477.

Not sure how much this baby is going to cost, but can you really put a price on sweet full carbon, full suspension, 29inch bliss? Perhaps you won't know till you ride one. I'll get back to you on that one when I get to ride one out at Trek World in a few months.

"Next stop, Palatine!" That's my usual stop. Most days I'd be scrambling to get off the train before the asshole conductor threw a fit, but not today. Today's different. He's gonna have to put up with my "two-wheeled nonsense" 'til the end of the line. I'm headed for the city, never been before. I've done my fair share of traveling and there's one thing I've learned: Anything could happen at any given time. Who knows? I might get lost, twist an ankle, eat an amazing hotdog, see massive sculptures, enjoy a cool lakefront breeze, get chased, listen to some live blues, taste a delicious new beer, drop in on a skate session, meet a beautiful barista, or race a fixie down Michigan Avenue. Only time will tell.
The bells go off as the train nears it's final destination. Everyone anxiously gathers near the exit doors. I can hear it. Just beyond my stainless steel reflection, I hear it. The sound of over two million people going about their daily lives in one of our nation's biggest cities. The doors open, time to get lost.

I set my alarm early this morning. I was off work today and the meteorologist said it was gonna be good shreddin' weather. His forecast had been a little off recently so I scraggled out of bed with one eye open and took a peek... bright sunshine. I had myself a couple peanut butter/honey/oatmeal/banana burritos and started my cruise. The air was cool and smelled of fresh lilacs as I pedaled through the neighborhood. Everything around me was alive; the tall grass fields covered in dandelions, the psycho geese were chasing each other at the pond, even the crazy biker Harley dudes were out cruisin'. After a gnarly ride and a couple close calls with some asshole drivers, I made it to the spot. I waited til there was nobody in sight before I entered the trail, then over the log I went, through some fallen brush and branches, up a few switchbacks, around the hollow tree trunk, over Fisherman's Creek, under the fallen bridge, paid that fucking troll, looked straight into the mirror, said "candyman, candyman, candyman", a weird black dude from the south side showed up with a hook for a hand, I proceeded to kick his ass time and time again at a "paper, rock, scissor" battle and won a magic genie bottle, I rubbed it, Robin Williams popped out of the thing and granted me 3 wishes: some Chico's Tacos, a case of Tecate, and directions to the trails.

FLATS F'N SUCK!!!

Especially when hauling ass down Mckelligon Canyon on a road bike. I just received this picture via cell phone from David Dawson.

Dawson, as we all like to call him, is one of the coolest most down to earth persons I know (not to mention a top notch BBQ master).

One hundred and too many stitches zippering across his knee, a damaged bicycle (R.I.P. Kestrel), and undoubtedly tons of pain, started off this poor guy's month.

The Doctors took care of the knee, and the pills help with the pain, but, this man's soul has been crushed by the loss of his bicycle.

If you have any bike parts, frame, fork, handlebars, or even a gift certificate to a bike shop you'd like to donate, let me know. I'm sure nothing more would get Dawson feeling better, then to know that he will have a bike to ride again, once he heals up.

When one of your best friends asks you to contribute to his blog, you’d be a fool to pass up the offer. Especially when it’s a blog about something you’re passionate about… bikes! As long as I have known Chris, we have shared this same passion. I guess what makes us different is he tends to be more of a bicycle promoter. Whether it’s taking photos, myspacing, going on group rides, racing or this website, he is constantly on a mission to share his love for bikes with others.
I admire this, and it is why I’m thrilled to contribute. Chris’ goal is to put FixedOnBikes on the bicycle industry’s map. If my blogging will help him get there, I’m all in.

About me:
If you have known Chris since he was a young peon at The Bicycle Company then you probably know me. I worked there from April of 2000 until early 2005. I went to college and moved on to a “real” job at a big corporation, but I have to admit that those 5 years at the bike shop were some of the best years off my life. When else do you get to work around bikes and have all of your best friends as co-workers? Eventually my job and inclination to try something new brought my girl and me to Austin. It was hard to leave everything that is familiar to me, but it has proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. It is a bicycle enthusiasts dream here. If you ride, Austin has so much to offer. There is such a variety of cyclists here that it’ll keep virtually any kind of bike scene alive. If you are a roadie, MTBer, fixie or BMXer this town has got something for you. My goal is to give you a glimpse of this with my future blogs.

Unfortunately, since Chris has asked me to write, the weather has been lousy here. It has been raining just about all week, but as soon as it lets up, I’ll get some quality pictures on here. More to come…

Do you hate paying for gas? Do you want to do your part for the environment? Do you want to avoid traffic? How about free parking right in front of your destination? Wanna be healthy?

So many of our problems, even a few major ones could be solved by riding bicycles. How you ask?

Before crashing markets, and global pandemics, there was this thing that had tons of news coverage. "Global Warming", remember? The media may be crowded with other happenings at the moment, but the problem is still there. Our heavy reliance on fossil fuels is damaging our home. Did you know in 2003 the cars idling in traffic wasted 5 billion gallons of fuel?

What about health? Did you know riding for 3 hours a week can reduce your risks for heart disease and stroke by 50%? That means you'll have a 50% better chance in not dying from one of the leading killers in the U.S.

May is National Bike Month. A perfect month to start living better for both yourself and the environment. You don't have to sell your car and vow to never use gasoline again(although that would be awesome of you). Rather, why don't you use your bike to ride to the grocery store, or maybe to the coffee shop, or video rental store, or work, or school, or to the post office? Think of all the short trips you make in your car, then, think of how you can make those same trips on a bicycle.

Unless you just happened across this blog by accident. You already love riding bikes, so why not ride them more? Your heart will thank you, and hopefully in the process you'll help make the sky a little clearer.

Bicycles, good clean fun, Earth agrees...

It is Earth week, and everyone is encouraged to do our part in ditching bad habits in favor of cleaner/greener living. Riding a bicycle, night or day, rain or shine, close or far, is the best choice for both you and earth when it comes to transportation.

I see more and more people on their bikes cruising around town. The growing popularity of bicycles in this city is a lovely sight to see. The last thing I want to see is this growth come to a skidding halt due to a fear of being injured/killed by an unaware motorist.

The drivers in this city are not so considerate of the non-motored commuters. Be careful when riding, especially during dusk and dawn when the sun glares and motorist's vision is impaired.

The best way? Ride like the drivers around you are dumb or don't see you(this is true for the most part), check traffic before turning, use head and tail lights at night, follow traffic laws, choose your route carefully, always carry ID, and wearing a helmet wouldn't hurt.

Be safe out there, and when you can, ride don't drive.

BIKE CLUB!!!

The first rule of Bike Club is, you do not talk about Bike Club. The second rule of Bike Club is, you DO NOT talk about Bike Club!

Ha ha, who am I kidding you can talk about bike club till your lips fall off, but don't do that because your gonna need your lips to help you sip down some suds after a fun game of BIKE POLO.

For those of you who don't know what Bike Polo is I will gladly explain so read on. (The rest of you can start making your mallets in true bike polo DIY tradition.)

Firstly your gonna need a bicycle. Any bicycle will do, however, due to the heavy contact of this sport you might wanna leave your carbon road bikes and high end mountain racers at home. Fixies, single speeders, hard tails, full rigids, "shit" bikes are probably your best choice, but anything that rolls will work.

You will also need a Mallet, made from things like old ski poles, trekking poles, old golf clubs or even walking canes. I'm using an old BMX Peg for the mallet head attached to an old sand wedge.

This is gonna be hardcourt bike polo so the course will be at a public basketball/tennis court, preferably with an enclosed perimeter. This helps with keeping the ball within the playing field.

The sport is played much like hockey or soccer or uhhh POLO, but done while riding a bicycle.

-Riders must keep both feet on/in the pedals while in play.

-Game size is a total of 6 A.K.A. 3 on 3.

Finally after what seemed to be a never ending spell of horrid wind, I get a day off from work, the weather is beautiful, and I am cursed with a virus wrecking havoc on my body. I hope everyone who wasn't ill rode to their heart's content.

I must say that this bedridden crap has allowed me to surf the web a bunch. I am determined to do the following at least a couple hundred times this year.

3. an alley cat race

Monday morning, I am sore to the bone, I have the ever so common cyclist tan, and I just ordered a 21t surly cog for my bike (from The Bicycle Co. of course). I learned a bunch from this year's Coyote Classic.

1. 3 liters of water runs out quick
2. 2 packs of gu is 2 too little
3. Pros are fast
4. SS class is really Pro class with one gear
5. Rocks are sharp
6. Tire sidewalls are thin
7. I need to dump my 2005 model shoes for a fresh pair (duh!)
8. Chain tools are a necessity
9. There is no such thing as too many CO2 cartridges.
10. I am extremely "underfit"

All said and done, anyone up for an evening ride?

I must say that I will be hating the clock come the start of my school week when waking up at 6:00am feels like 5:00am. Mainly cause it is, or as of 03/08/09, was 5:00am. I love my sleep, in fact there are only a few things that can get me out of bed in the morning, one being the urge to pee.

However hard it is to get adjusted to stationary jet lag in which the clock does the moving for us. I cannot help but be excited for that extra hour of day light.

Back in the shop days, I remember a challenge posed to one of my co-workers. I told him to spin the rear wheel of a couple of different bikes in sequence, one of which was my own, and I would pick out the sound of my bike. The wheels spun, the cassettes buzzed one after the other, and I picked out my bike.

The point being, each one of my bikes has it's unique sound. Whether it is the sound of my twenty carving a bowl, or the sound of my chain pulling at the gear on my fixie, or the shock on my mountain bike opening its valve whilst rolling through a rock garden.

I know I am not the only one who can recognize the sound of their bike. More so, I know that most of us when sitting at an outdoor cafe, or on the rare chance that we are walking down a sidewalk and not riding, the sound of a coasting bike turns our heads as quickly as the sound of a woman's voice entering a room does.

I guess it's a bit of random rambling, but its all I can say for now. Five days (almost six) into the month. 16 days till the Coyote Classic. The GPS of both the beginner and sport/single speed courses are up. Check them out on The Bike Co Blog.

You know your gonna end up riding that Sunday, so why not race. All excuses aside, it's not about who wins, it's about riding your bike and having a blast.

When I stumbled upon this video clip on Trek's King of the Mountain blog. The still frame of dirt roosting into the air begged to be watched. A few frames later, shovels are tossed into the bed of a truck that is later loaded with a bicycle. The bicycle in this imagery, makes this a relevant topic, but it is the shovels that I must center as my point.

I have ridden trails that are now paved and I have piled shovel after shovel onto what was eventually bulldozed. Granted, I may not dig the most nor do I have years of building trail, but I have dug up the soil in hopes that not only I but others may ride. When the work is being done, the possibility that it all may be taken away is far from thought. The anticipation for that unique sound of tires gripping dirt keeps the mind focused on the reward to come.

Watching this clip, I noticed the skillfully manicured trails and jumps. I realized the vast majority of bike riders love their bicycle enough to willingly sweat, blister and bleed in an attempt to make the experience that much better. It is that unwavering spirit that makes me feel the need to salute.

To all the trail builders, to anyone who has ever picked up a shovel and plowed the earth to create a playground for two wheels, Cheers!

Despite his claims to the contrary Tyson a.k.a. "The Goon" will be leading the group on sunday at Chuck Heinrich Park. The ride will be leaving around 12ish (Saturday night is gonna require some sleeping in)). We will be riding the proposed course for the Coyote Classic. I'm not sure on the mileage yet, but you can expect at least 20 miles of sunday funday goodness.

The Bicycle Company will continue to host this fun filled race, and the date looks to be hovering around the end of March. I don't have the specifics yet, but I know the crew at The Bike Co. is working on what I am sure will be another fun filled event.

What I do know, is that there is a change of venue. The addition of the Chuck Heinrich Park to the Franklin Mountain State Park has allowed for the shift form the Tom May's section to the North East side of the park, keeping the Coyote Classic fresh and challenging.

You can expect a relatively early race start. The categories will be the usual pro, cat 1-3, single speed and the ever so popular law enforcement class, plenty of prizes and give aways (maybe even a raffle. Past raffles have included a Rocky Mountain frame, Cannondale bike). Lets just say, The Bike Co. knows how to put on a race.

Keep checking back for more details on racer registration, race date, course info etc. If you aren't planning on racing, don't worry, you can make up for it by volunteering. Volunteers are needed to help at feed zones, racer checkpoints, traffic control, and grilling up the food.

Intestinal Fortitude

65 riders registered, 60 started and 40 finished the grueling endurance challenge known as The Puzzler. The race was a jigsaw testing your pain threshold, your mental endurance and willingness to sit in the saddle hour after hour. Jennifer Tribe-Wilson (pictured above) won the grueling 50 mile Puzzler in a record 5 hours and 58 minutes, that's 14 minutes faster than the next competitor.

The Bicycle Company's very own, Mike Rosson (pictured above), came in 3rd overall and received 2nd place for category 1 men finishing in 6 hours and 24 minutes.

Congratulations to all the riders who were brave enough to ride The Puzzler.

As I was checking through my e-mail today I found this. Since I know from experience the validity of the threat, I decided to relay this to everyone.

May I suggest using a kryptonite u-lock and if possible a hired security guard with Navy SEAL training.

Campus Crime Advisory

The University of Texas at El Paso Police Department is investigating an incident involving the theft of three bicycles during January 2009.

Information on a possible suspect has been developed.

The UTEP Police Department asks UTEP faculty, staff, students and visitors to take precautions in securing their bicycle to designated racks when leaving them unattended.

The suspect is described as a white male in his mid-30s, 5'11, and with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, black jeans, black baseball cap and a black backpack. He may also have a goatee and numerous tattoos on his arms.

If you see someone matching this description, please contact the University Police immediately at 747-5611.

After 3 hard months without a mountain bike I am complete again. Mike at The Bicycle Co. hooked me up with a 2009 Gary Fisher Rig. If you've never ridden a 29er may I recommend the Fisher 29er line, after all Fisher is one of the founding fathers of the "mountain bike".

The Puzzler Cometh

With only five more days until race day, quite possibly the hardest mountain bike challenge in the West Texas Area will leave cyclists sore and in need of some serious carbo loading. The 2nd annual Puzzler Endurance Challenge will take place at Franklin MT. State Park on Saturday February 7th 2009. If you haven't ridden the course yet, rest assured it is marked quite well, but if you haven't been training I would not recommend it. The course is filled with fun single track, some jeep roads, and a masochistic amount of climbing.

Categories: Pro, Cat 1,Cat 2 and Single Speed will ride the 50mile course.

Category 3 riders will compete on the 35mile course.

If you haven't registered yet, remember that there will be NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION.
The registration fee is now $50 and will be open until the 6Th.

SUMMERTIME is far away but I hear SPRING's cassette Rolling!

Mid July I couldn't help but think of the cooler months to come. Fast forward to winter, daylight disappears, temperature drops, clothes get bulkier, weekly rides end and I can't help but think, "Why the hell didn't I ride more last summer?" Truth is, I rode plenty, but when you love bikes, riding plenty is just not enough.

Smelting hot summer days wear their welcome thin as quick as frosty cold ones (days, not beer). I have logged onto weather.com plenty of times hoping for perfect conditions on my day off. Lately, days have been perfect. I think spring has come early. The sun's warmth and the lack of wind and rain makes it easy to pack away the jacket, and the thought of gloves doesn't even cross my mind. All I want to do is pedal away.
